Every office needs printer ink - at least once in a while. Even in this day and age of email, there are still a few things where it seems safer to have a paper copy on hand. We went through the order process at TomatoInk to see how smooth it was, and then took pictures of the product once it arrived, so you know exactly what you can expect.

Shopping Experience:

The TomatoInk homepage makes it very easy to select the brand of ink that you want, with an intuitive drop down function. Simply select your brand, printer series, and printer model from the drop down.

Once you've given TomatoInk all the pertinent information on your printer, it'll automatically direct you to a page where you can see what products are available to suit your printer. Pay special attention to the value promises that TomatoInk makes. All ink comes with a 1-year money-back guarantee, which is a good to know. The last thing you want is to spend hard-earned money on printer ink that for whatever reason doesn't deliver the desired results. Defect rates may be low, but it does happen that a bad cartridge ships - regardless of where you shop - and it's key to look for guarantees to ensure that you can get your money back, or better yet a replacement filter that doesn't have issues.

I opted for the value pack for my printer. This way I'll have a spare black cartridge on hand, and probably won't have to buy ink for quite some time.

If you click on the cartridge description, it'll actually take you to a dedicated page to read more about what you're buying. If you don't need to learn more you can simply click the "Add To Cart" button and get moving right away.

See those savings? No objection from me! After you "Add To Cart" TomatoInk immediately confirms what you did - so you're not accidentally putting anything in your shopping cart that doesn't belong there. (Kind of like that bag of Cheetos that snuck its way into your cart last time you were at the grocery store ... ).

Purchase & Checkout:

You can choose to go directly to your cart, or continue shopping. In our case we had what we needed, so it was time to check out. Our cart looked like this:

Make sure you take full advantage of any available coupon codes for some extra deals on your way through checkout. I always visit TheCoupon.co before making any online purchase to see what coupons and promo codes might be hiding out there. Once you've got one, just enter your code and hit "Apply".

You'll see the savings immediately reflected in your cart.

You'll enter your billing information, and then you can opt to have your order shipped to the same address as your billing address.

We chose the cheapest shipping option, because we didn't mind how quickly our ink showed up.

You can choose to pay using a credit or debit card, or use PayPal. Notice that all payments are secured by McAfee SECURE. If you pay via PayPal that's simply an added layer of security.

You'll be given a final chance to review your order. Make sure that you're buying the right item, that your coupon code worked, and see what your grand total comes to with shipping and handling.

Delivery & Unboxing:

We placed our order on March 10th. We received a shipping confirmation on March 12th, and it arrived on March 23rd. It took 9 business days from when the order was placed, but only 7 business days from when we received the shipping confirmation. TomatoInk appears to have a 2-3 day time frame for handling prior to shipment, so keep that in mind when ordering your office supplies.

The ink arrived in a standard, padded envelope, shipping from Newark in California. The three ink cartridges (two black, one color) fit perfectly inside the packaging.

The color ink cartridge was exactly as pictured at checkout.

The black ink cartridge however did not look like the cartridge pictured at checkout, and was clearly labeled as a "Remanufactured Ink Cartridge". This is not uncommon when shopping for ink online, especially when you're able to get the ink at such a bargain price. So far we've had no issues with the quality of printing from the remanufactured ink cartridge.

Final Score:

Overall the shopping experience for TomatoInk was seamless, and the way they guide you through your product selection makes the whole process very quick. The quality of the product is great, and the price is extremely fair. Greater transparency on the combined shipping & handling times would be the only way we could see to improve the customer experience.
